Key Stage 3 English (Years 7, 8 and 9 )
We focus on developing an understanding of how to critically evaluate texts by instilling a strong foundation in:
- The different language devices, structural techniques, literary terms, word classes and sentence forms.
- How to seek out evidence in the text to support a point of view, including justifying inferences with evidence.
- How to analyse a writer’s choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features, and evaluating their effectiveness and impact on the reader.
- How to make an informed personal response and also to recognise that other responses to a text are possible.
- Descriptive writing and persuasive writing.
- Improving their active vocabulary.
Key Stage 4 English (Years 10 and 11 )
- Practising past GCSE papers.
- Practising how to write accurately, fluently, and effectively by inculcating a thorough understanding of the mark scheme.
- Learning how to select and organise ideas, facts, and key points, and to cite evidence and quotes effectively and pertinently for support and emphasis.
- Learning to restructure their writing, amend any grammatical mistakes to improve coherence, and to add ambitious vocabulary for overall effectiveness.
- Descriptive writing and persuasive writing.
- Learning to adapt their writing for a wide range of purposes and audiences: to describe, narrate, explain, instruct, and argue.
